Grows in patches that are often pure and rather
extensive. Recorded only from granitic rocks, commonly in
places that are flushed with trickles of water at least after
rain, and on gently sloping, steep, or vertical surfaces.
Records are from rocks about tors (often N.-facing, once
S.-facing), rocky slopes above a river, a mossy boulder on old
mine-spoil and in an old quarry. Found in open and wooded
areas, unshaded to part shaded.
One record c.fr.: capsules dehiscing 4.
