Scapania curta

Range & Status

A circumboreal species occurring in N. Europe (southwards to Italy and Greece), Siberia, N. America and Greenland. Widely scattered in British Isles, with records from N. Scotland and W. Ireland to Cornwall and SE. England, but probably under-recorded owing to past confusion with S. scandica (Arnell & H.Buch) Macvicar.

Regional Distribution

Known from only two sites, in SW33 (Lower Bostraze) and SX05 (near Bugle). Old records from elsewhere are dismissed by Paton (1969).

Habitat & Ecology

A calcifuge, pioneer species that colonises bare ground in old china-clay pits, quarries, sandy woodland rides, on sandstone rocks, peaty soil in a pasture and on detritus by streams (Long in Hill et al ., 1991).
